“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” -Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
Background Information
Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, written in the early eighteen hundreds. It centers around a girl named Elizabeth Bennet, who has a large family of four sisters, and her mother and father. Her parents’ goal throughout the book is to get their many daughters married. The book mainly centering around the many miscommunications and issues that arise when new suitors come to town (Mr. Bingley & Mr. Darcy!).
The Review
As much as I enjoyed this book, it isn’t for everyone. If you prefer plot-driven books with higher stakes, Pride and Prejudice probably isn’t for you. The book is completely relationship focused, illustrating many interesting character dynamics and customs of the time period. However, some may find this type of read boring and dull, as it’s just ‘a bunch of people going to each other’s houses’.
Personally, I adored this novel. It was such a comforting mix of witty, introspective, and sweet. The relationship between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy was so well developed and his character development was amazing. Considering I normally quite dislike historical fiction, this book is a gem and one of my favorites.
In my humble opinion, you should definitely give this book a try if you like romance and literary fiction.
I give it FIVE STARS!!
Rant-y Review (with spoilers!)
Where do I start?
First of all, I would like to say how much I utterly despise Mr. Collins and Mr. Wickham. Here is my list of reasons I hate them with a seething passion.
Mr. Collins:
- He has bad manners.
- He had the absolute GALL to be offended when Lizzy rejected him.
- He COULD NOT take a hint when Lizzy rejected him, and devalued her opinion on the matter.
Mr. Wickham:
- He tried to elope with Georgiana to get her inheritance (who by the way, is fiFTEEN!)
- He lied about Mr. Darcy to Lizzy
- He eloped with Lydia (who is SIXTEEN)
- By the way, he is TWENTY SIX YEARS OLD- thought you should know.
- He’s a hypocrite
Also, I just want to say how much I adore Mr. Darcy and Lizzy’s relationship and the 2005 movie (I know, it isn’t as book accurate as 1995- but there’s something about it. I love it so much!)
Anyhow, I love this book (and the 2005 movie!) and think you should definitely read it!
